Three-dimensional | Sculpture | Clay
The Susquehannock, almost completely forgotten today, were one of the most formidable tribes of the Mid-Atlantic at the time of European contact, controlling the vast area from the Potomac River in Northern Virginia to Southern New York.
The first European contact with the Susquehannock occurred in 1608 when Captain John Smith (of Jamestown) explored the north side of the Chesapeake Bay. This meeting was friendly, but Smith was wary of their reputation and appalled by their size. His later accounts described them as giants."
